Peppermint mochas, peppermint bark, candy canes... peppermint is like a Christmas staple. If you've been craving your favorite peppermint treat, I've got good news for you. While those famous Christmas treats are full of sugar, there is a silver lining. A flavor that marks the season, peppermint has some amazing health benefits:
- Reduces Cravings: Turns out that just a whiff of peppermint may keep you from eating it. A recent study had people take a smell of peppermint oil every 2 hours. They were not only less hungry than those who didn't smell the peppermint, but they ended up eating 2800 less calories over the course of a week.
- Helps the Gut: Peppermint has been used for centuries to cure stomach problems like cramps gas etc etc. Most recently it's been used as a relief for IBS. Seems like those after dinner mints are helpful for not only just a fresh breath!
- Relieves Headaches: A recent study reported that rubbing peppermint oil on the temples and forehead for a headache proved to be just as effective as acetaminophen after 15 minutes.
Although it doesn't give you an excuse to eat anything with peppermint on it, be grateful that there are at least some benefits in your favorite Christmas indulgence. Happy holidays, babes xo
