I've always been a big fan of Mexican food so naturally Cilantro has been one of my favorite herbs. It's seed, Coriander has also become my favorite spice to add to my dishes. Until recently I never realized the many health benefits I've received from my flavorful friend. I've started to add a handful of the herb to almost all my salads. It's also a lovely garnish for almost any meal.
Here are just a few of the wonderful properties found in both cilantro and it's seed, coriander:
- Cleanses and Detoxifies: This powerful cleansing food even helps with heavy metals. While there's little we can do to avoid heavy metals, cilantro one way of helping our body cleanse.
- Lowers Cholesterol Levels: Coriander lowers levels of total and LDL (the "bad" cholesterol), while actually increasing levels of HDL (the "good" cholesterol).
- Treats Diabetes: Studies show it helps to stimulate insulin and lower blood sugar.
- Balances Hormones: Cilantro helps to reduce anxiety, helps with sleep, and eat up ladies! Cilantro prevents hormonal mood swings and even cramps.
- Kills Bacteria: Not only does cilantro help prevent infections in your gut, but it's been said that when adding to a chicken dish, it's a natural defense against salmonella.
If you're not a fan of my absolute favorite herb, you might consider adding it to your diet.
Or if you haven't tried coriander before, pick some up the next time you're at the store. It's kind of like pepper but with a really great middle eastern flavor to it. At least add a little cilantro to your next mexican dish! Your body will be glad you did. Stay healthy, babes! xo
